If you’ve always wanted to take your eye makeup game to a whole new level, but you didn’t really know how to accomplish that – you’re at the right place. Applying your eye makeup has never been easier, so keep on reading if you want to know how to master it. Here are four foolproof tips on how to get it done like a true pro, so check them out.
A general guide to picking an appropriate eyeshadow color
Choosing an appropriate eyeshadow shade actually depends on many different factors, from the color of your eyes to the event you’re about to attend, but don’t worry – it isn’t as tricky as you probably think. Light and neutral tones like coral and champagne will perfectly suit blue eyes, while muted purple is definitely a fantastic choice for ladies with green eyes. Subtle nuances of green and dusty pinks will flawlessly suit hazel eyes, whereas neutral shades like bronzy gold and salmon look fabulous on women with brown eyes.
However, if you have an important event coming up, you can always step outside your comfort zone and try a bolder look that features bright colors. Or try a smokey eye for a dramatic effect, especially in the evening.
Know your brushes
Applying your eyeshadow like a pro isn’t just a matter of your skills, but more of your makeup tools. First of all, you’ll need a flat stiff brush that can pack the eyeshadow onto the eyelid. Glitter pigments should be applied with this kind of brush since it can pick up the product easily – just remember to spritz it with a little bit of setting spray, to avoid major fallout.
On the other hand, fluffy dome brushes are fantastic for blending out colors to perfection, which is particularly important when you’re using more than one color. Creating a smooth transition between the shades can be accomplished thanks to such fluffy brush, which is exactly why it’s an absolute must-have. You’ll also need a pencil brush to apply the product onto the lower lash line and complete your overall eye look.
Don’t skip an eyeshadow primer
Prepping your eyelid is of the utmost importance before applying your eyeshadow, simply because it’s an essential step towards a flawless and long-lasting eye makeup look. Make sure you thoroughly clean the area around the eyes before applying the primer, so that you can use a moisturizer or an eye cream before it. Once that’s done, apply your eyeshadow primer to smooth it all out and provide a seamless finish. Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Soft Ochre by MAC Cosmetics is probably the most raved about primer for a good reason, since it really helps your eyeshadows stay on much longer, so you can give it a try and see if it really is worth all the hype or not.
On the other hand, if you don’t have a primer, you can always use a concealer that matches your skin tone around the eyes. Just be sure you set it with a translucent powder, so that you provide a great base for your eye look.
Don’t forget the mascara
A lot of women claim that they would never leave home without at least one coat of mascara, and we surely understand what they’re talking about. Mascara is a truly wonderful product that can make a huge difference, so don’t forget to apply it after you’re done with your eyeshadow. It’ll undoubtedly help you achieve a refreshed, wide awake look every woman is striving for.
However, if you don’t have time to carefully apply a couple of layers of your favorite mascara every morning, you should know that getting eyelash extensions can really make your life much easier. These can give you exactly what you need for a natural appearance, which is they became so popular in Australia. Ladies love getting fabulous eyelash extensions in Sydney, since these provide a simple yet so flawless eye look that’s long-lasting and doesn’t require a lot of mascara on a daily basis.
As you can see, coming up with an impeccable eye look has never been easier. All you have to do is to stick to our tips, and you’ll see that you’ll master this skill in no time!

I always feel like I’m doing my eyeshadow wrong. I debate if the darker color goes in the crease, or just above it, or if it is supposed to go like V and come in to the outer corner of the eye. Trial and error, I guess. And video tutorials! That should help.
I hope this post helped. There is plenty on YouTube. I’m always watching tutorials about the eyes because, I think, that’s the trickiest part of makeup (at least for me!). xo
I am one of those girls that won’t leave the house without mascara on! If I had to keep one makeup item that would be it!
Hi Ashley, I so agree! I always wear mascara no matter what, even if it’s just to run out for a bit. I have long lashes, but they’re light so I need mascara on them. xo
OMG, you must have read my mind. I was just applying eyeliner and wishing I could get a tutorial on applying eyeshadow correctly. Love this post – so much useful info. I have a ton of brushes but I need a better range of eye palettes. Thank you so much for sharing!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad that you found the post helpful. The guest poster Sophia Smith really knows her stuff!! xo
Confession: no matter how many makeup tutorials I watch on YouTube, I still can’t get eyeshadow makeup right, hence I always end up just wearing eyeliner and mascara. Thanks for sharing these tips!
Absolutely! Thank you for stopping by! xo
This was a great guide for me b/c I’m sooooo bad at applying eye makeup. I usually only wear mascara. Eyelash extensions sounds like something I’d try! And I finally figured out that a primer does wonders for eye makeup 😉
I’m a mascara girl too! Eye makeup primer is wonderful. I started using it only a few months ago and it’s made all the difference! 🙂 xo
I love makeup! And I love learning new ways to wear it. I have brown eyes and have always worn mostly purples.
I had never heard to spritz the eyeshadow brush with setting spray. Great tip.

Thanks and all the thanks goes to Sophia Smith who wrote this article for my blog! She has great tips! 🙂 xo
I love me some eye make-up! I treat my eyelashes like they are my children so they don’t fall out. The bigger the better please.
I’m glad that you enjoyed that post! xo
Such a great guide for applying eye makeup right! I feel like so many people (myself include half the time) forget eyeshadow primer!
