I. Pantone’s Color of the Year
Each year, Pantone selects a Color of the Year. According to Pantone’s website, the Color of the Year is one moment in time that provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute’s year-round work doing the same for designers and brands. It goes on to state that “As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence.”
II. Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year: Living Coral
Pantone describes Living Coral as an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.
Vibrant, yet mellow, Pantone’s Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.
In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.
Representing the fusion of modern life, Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.
III. Living Coral On the Runway
During past seasons, Living Coral has made its way to the fashion runways. I am certain there are other examples, but this collage from the Spring/Summer collections was the one that immediately came to mind when Pantone announced Living Coral as their 2019 Color of the Year.
