How to Add Vitamin C to Your Daily Skincare Routine

The key is the form of vitamin C that is being applied. The term to look for is ascorbic acid (also known as L-ascorbic acid), which is the most stable and effective form of vitamin C in skin care.  Most dermatologists agree that the best vitamin C skincare product to use is serum, because they are more effective than creams or toners.

Pure ascorbic acid has consistently been proven to be the most effective at penetrating the skin barrier.  Vitamin C effectiveness also increases when combined with other antioxidants, such as vitamin E.  Together they can double to protect against free-radical damage.

If you’re new to using the ingredient on your skin, start slowly. It’s quite potent, so you only need a few drops for each application. It’s best to start out with a low concentration and work your way up as your skin grows more accustomed to the ingredient.

Five percent serums are generally gentle enough for sensitive skin, and you can go all the way up to 20 percent, which will work more quickly to brighten and improve skin pigmentation.
