Most women, at one time or another, have analyzed their body shape and wondered how to dress it.  Below are five shapes that are most common to the female body.

1.  The Hourglass

Hourglass

One of the most common shapes of the female body is the hourglass. It is characterized by hip and bust measurements being of equal size, with a narrower waist measurement. Your shoulders are slightly round, and your legs are in proportion with your upper body. Because your waist is the smallest part of your body, it’s your best asset to show off.

What to Wear for a Hourglass Shape

Wear bodycon shaped dresses, add a belt to a sweater or cardigan to emphasize the waist, wear high waisted trousers or skinny jeans.

2.  The Apple (Round)

Apple Body Shape

If you have an apple-shaped body, then your body is “top heavy,” meaning you have a wide torso, broad shoulders, and a full bust, waist, and upper back. Apple-shaped bodied women also tend to have thinner arms, legs, and hips.

Apply-shaped bodies look great with monochromatic outfits or outfits with “pops” of color.  Long lines of black, blues and other neutrals will make you appear taller and leaner.

3.  The Pear (Triangle)

Pear Body Shape

Curvy hips, thick thighs, and a full bottom are the key characteristics of the pear-shaped body type.  Pear-shaped bodies have a smaller frame on top and a relatively small waist with larger hips and bottom.  In regards to sizes, one example would be a woman who wears a size 6 on top, but a 10 or even 12 on the bottom.

Create balance in your outfit by wearing volume heavy but fitted tops and sparkly accessories. Keep the bottom simple to keep proportion in check.

4.  The Rectangle

Rectangle Body Shape

The rectangle body shape generally has a waist that measures less than 9 inches smaller than your hip or bust.  Your waist is not as well defined as an Hourglass Body Shape. However, your weight is evenly distributed throughout your body. This can also be referred to as the “Athletic” shape.

Belts around the waist can create volume on the shoulders along with structured jackets and scarves. To create volume on the hips, try peplum tops and pleated pants.

5.  The Inverted Triangle

Inverted Triange Body Shape

The Inverted Triangle shape has broad shoulders and narrow hips.

What To Wear for an Inverted Triangle

Create volume on the bottom with wide leg and flared jeans. Fitted tops will add balance to your shape, but stay away from cap sleeves or shoulder pads. If you are wearing a cardigan or jacket, keeping the buttons low will create a narrower appearance on top.
