Instead of haphazardly applying your nighttime skincare products (I’ve done that), I have developed a process that provides maximum benefits for each class of products. I’ve done this through a lot of research and trial and error. Check out the list below and think about applying your products in a similar order. It may make a huge difference for you!
1. Serums First!
Serums are generally the lightest of all the products, therefore, it makes sense that they should be applied first. Remember, the general rule is lightest to heaviest, as you apply your products. Also, serums deliver active ingredients more efficiently when applied directly to the skin. Above is an assortment of my serums.
Give your skin a mega-dose of Vitamin C! Timeless’s 20% Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid serum brightens skin, builds collagen, and evens out tone. Enhanced with Vitamin E & Ferulic Acid, this serum is a great pick me up for dull, discolored, and stressed skin, while providing 24/7 protection against environmental pollutants.
Timeless’s Q10 Serum & Hyaluronic Acid, is made with 3 wrinkle-fighting superstars and is the ultimate weapon to fight the visible signs of aging. Q10 is a powerful, naturally occurring antioxidant that energizes skin cells to re-build collagen & elastin. Hyaluronic Acid increases & retains moisture for skin that looks and feels hydrated. This anti-aging duo works overtime to replenish and repair while smoothing fine lines & wrinkles.
2. Take a Break
If you give each product a minute to dry, it won’t pill according to Allure Magazine. Put on a product and then do a separate task like brushing your teeth or choosing the next day’s outfit. Then apply the second product and so on.
3. Lock It Down with Moisturizer
Moisturizer is key to any layering routine because it seals the serums applied to your skin which makes them more effective. As you can see, I have three main moisturizers that I use depending on my skin’s condition that day. I have products from Lancôme, Clinique, and Olay. They are all wonderful to use!
Clinique’s Moisture Surge boosts moisture by a significant degree and provides 100 hours of hydration. It can be used morning and night on clean skin, or over makeup as a dewy highlighter!
Olay Regenerest Night Recovery Cream is specifically designed to provide intense hydration and regenerate skin surface cells while you sleep.
With Lancôme’s Rénergie, you will experience a rediscovery of your skin’s looks of youthful strength and resilience. A unique firming and anti-wrinkle effect helps visibly smooth and plump skin. This Double Performance treatment has been shown to dramatically decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin’s firmness
4. Add an Essential Oil
In small doses (1-2 drops), essential oils make skin radiant. Put 1-2 drops in your moisturizer because, as a rule, oils can penetrate moisturizers, but not vice versa. Skip the oil if you’re wearing more than two serums under your moisturizer, because, at some point, it’s just too much product.
I use these two essential oils in my moisturizer and get great results. I’ve also applied them directly to my skin and had similar results!
Moroccan Argan Oil is rich in essential fatty acids and absorbs quickly. It is ideal for dry, damaged, and wrinkled skin. It will improve skin elasticity and supports cell regeneration.
Rosehip Oil contains omega-3, omega-6, and omega 9 carotenoids which are crucial to the regeneration of skin cells and repairing of damaged tissues. Vitamins A, D, E and other ingredients all help to reduce the signs of aging including fine lines and wrinkles.
I hope that this tutorial about the order of application of nighttime skincare products was helpful. I also hope the extra information about some of the products, particularly the serums, was also useful. I wish you the best in your skincare journey!
