• The most googled self-care activity in the United States is journaling, taking the #1 spot in 14 states
  • Exercise topped 11 states, followed closely by yoga and podcast in six and five states each, respectively
  • Surprising findings were pedicure (1 state), massage (1 state), and bath (2 states) as forms of self-care activities

Acknowledging the importance of self-care, many Americans prioritize their well-being, actively seeking moments of relaxation for a balanced and satisfying life.

Self-care comes in different shapes, but the idea is simple: it’s about looking after yourself and your needs, whether they’re mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, or social. And it seems that each state has their own collective self-care activity preferences, according to a Google study.

The research team at AnnaSpanish conducted a study to find out the most Googled self-care activity in each state.

To do this, the team analyzed Google search data for more than 49 self-care activities and then studied specific searches for each self-care activity.

The most Google-searched self-care activity across the United States is journaling. Journaling was the top self-care activity in 14 out of 50 states, with states like North Carolina, Washington, Arizona, and Wisconsin searching for it more than any other type of self-care activity.

Next on the list is exercise, coming out on top in 11 states. It was the most googled self-care activity in Alaska, which makes sense considering all the outdoor activities available in the mountainous state. Those in New Mexico and Texas, among other states, also turn to exercise as their top form of self-care.

Six states, including California and New York, have yoga as their top self-care activity. It seems that in the active lifestyle hub of California and the bustling metropolis of New York, yoga provides a serene escape.

Following closely behind is podcast, taking the lead as a self-care activity in five states, including Virginia, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. This shared affinity for podcasts across these states indicates how this medium has become an integral part of self-care routines.

In three states, including Illinois, Maine, and Michigan, meditation is the most googled type of self-care, indicating a preference to turn to meditation for moments of inner peace and mindfulness.

Meanwhile, in three other states — Montana, North Dakota, and Oregon — music serves as a therapeutic escape.

Iowa and Ohio residents turn to the soothing and aromatic qualities of essential oils for relaxation and rejuvenation more than any other type of self-care activity.

Taking a relaxing bath is the top self-care activity in Colorado and Mississippi, while prioritizing a good night’s sleep ranks as the most googled self-care activity for those in Georgia and Missouri.

Hawaii and Florida residents like to treat themselves with massage and pedicure therapies, respectively, as a form of self-care activity.

A spokesperson at AnnaSpanish commented on the findings:
“The different self-care preferences across states reflect the dynamic nature of individuals’ well-being pursuits.

Self-care is not a one-size-fits-all concept; rather, it is deeply personal, influenced by both individual needs and the cultural context of each region.

If you haven’t already made plans for this year, make sure to prioritize self-care whether it’s journaling, exercise, massage, or whatever works for you best.

Tailor it to your schedule and budget, scheduling time for yourself. Remember, you can’t give from an empty cup! Embracing self-care will leave you with energy to spare throughout the whole year.”

Methodology
The research team analyzed search volumes for 49 keywords related to self-care over the past year to determine the most searched self-care activity in each state.

For each self-care activity, the study looked at the specific keywords and phrases that were searched on Google, such as, ‘journaling self care’, ‘journaling to relax’, ‘journaling to reduce stress’, and so on. They did so for all 49 self-care activities with over 200 related keywords to each self-care activity.

The team then calculated the total number of searches for each self-care activity in each state to determine which self-care activity had the highest number of searches.
