I had the pleasure of interviewing Maison Madison founders Susannah and Colette to find out more about their beautiful collections.

Why has “tablescaping” become the new home décor obsession?

After the pandemic, we saw a spike of interest in hosting more at home, making at home recipes from scratch, and many that were not initially interested in home cooking, started to become much more interested. There was this fascination with making home cooked recipes and tablescaping followed that. I think many noticed their dining items at home were not so stylish, and the importance of styling your kitchen and table became a long term trend. Now I notice more and more even the non-typical demographics like single men at home, are more interested in home decor than ever before, as your home represents who you are as a person.

Why has investing in quality dinnerware replaced fast home décor purchases?

The more you cook and host the more you realise that quality is really for long term use. If you buy better quality items, they are less likely to be replaced so you are investing for the future, and the pieces you buy are timeless.

Why is hosting replacing going out for millennials and Gen Z?

I think overall, it’s easier to gather together at home rather than trying to book a trendy restaurant that does not want to host bigger tables. If you host at home, you have full control of what you are cooking, how big your party size is, and can be less hectic than trying to find a restaurant that can accommodate everyone’ s needs. Additionally, the online trends for ‘making it yourself’ at home has been more popular on social media, especially for millennials, they relate a lot to what their parents and grandparents did at home which has a lot of culture and traditions in their family so they want to often replicate that and it passes down through generations.

How can you build a chic tablescape without spending a fortune?

We are lucky to have so many options in the US retail market. We have such great exposure to playing around with so many different layers of retail, as well as holiday promos. That expensive glassware set will eventually go on sale, or you can replicate some trends through mood boards or using Pinterest. There are so many amazing vintage markets, or local stores in cosmopolitan cities like New York, and find actual gems to add big pieces of finishing touches to your tablescapes. I tend to like classic colours like a deep blue, or even a nice pop with yellow. There are a vast range of beautiful options.

What are the five pieces every host should own before buying another seasonal trend?

Hard to pick! I think serving platters, one beautiful centrepiece on the table could be a vintage vase, or glass centrepiece, a set of glass or silver candle sticks for candles or shabbat candles, good quality silverware, and gorgeous dinnerware!
